Spin Art

Yes, the students are busy in their last week of the term, making independent projects (to be posted next week!) but considering it is the day after Halloween, there was an option to explore some spin art on the wheel.  We taped paper down to the clay wheels, and lots of students took advantage of the trance-like centering (and centrifugal force!).  Jaylan tried some folded paper, and repeating patterns- a cool second step after getting inspired by the centering exercise.

Carolina Designer Craftsmen Guild High School Art Contest

My Portfolio class will all try to submit work to this contest coming up at the end of October.  If any other students are interested in submitting ONE work, it's a very easy process where I, as the teacher, email a jpeg.  Let me know if you're interested!  Deadline is October 31, so I would need your image by October 20th.

Quaker Principles made visible by US First Years

The First Years were with me today- We started by watching this awesome video by the band OK GO, Needing/Wanting.  We talked about what it must have taken to make this happen (besides money...) and then they were split into 6 groups that were asked to visualize the six Quaker Philosophies that CFS believes.  Photos of the projects to come, but they'll also be displayed at the Back to School Night, Thursday, October 3rd!

Here's the 6 projects that the 30+ students collaborated on!  Check our website (www.cfsnc.org).  Do you know which tenet is which?

"Carry On" Day

Students are given the chance to return to the lessons from the last few weeks and complete or re-attempt to engage in the activities.  Here at the top you see a more complete circle to square image, with great texture and shape emerging, thanks to the student's attention to line and detail.  There's also a lot of energy.  Students returned to landscapes, negative space, line, and portraiture.  Everyone had to tell me what they did, trying to use as much vocabulary as they could.  Will put all the words I see into a Wordle.  Stay tuned.

Next up- Perspective

A little warm-up for the next couple of days, where we'll combine texture, value, line and shape to start trying to draw still life images to scale and from our unique perspectives.  Classes had to work together to find where the birds would land on the wires, and I asked them afterwards to reflect on what role they felt comfortable taking in group activities.  Think of all the design jobs out there- more often than not, these creative folks work together to produce their visual ideas.  What role would you take in this project?  Production?  Director?

Foundations of Art through Literature

Working with the Foundations of Literature class as they transition from reading and reflecting on Into the Wild, to Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse.  This is one of Hermann Hesse's watercolors- after the students finish their 'Hero/Lunatic' projects (see below), I think watercolors will be a nice place to go!

Make bowls on the wheel Sept 16-20, for TABLE

empty_bowls
Students can sign up to make bowls all next week during lunch, September 16-20, for this event!

What on earth is it for?

Good question.  Now discuss.

Working outside

Great bonus of nice days at our school- working outside!  Students are drawing landscapes using only texture, trying to avoid contour and outlines.  How many different textures can one use to portray depth and space?  With THAT many leaves?

Circles to Spheres

Value with lines, working from the previous exercises including texture, gesture and contour drawing and shape.  Circles become SPHERES!
